Commitment to beautiful form

The story of the Poiat begun when Timo Mikkonen (b. 1979) and Antti Rouhunkoski’s (b. 1978) paths crossed when they studied at the University of Arts Helsinki. They started doing spatial design projects together and noticed that their collaboration went very well. This kindled the idea of wanting to create their own company one day, and Poiat Studio was co-founded in 2010 after their graduation and a period of work in other interior architecture offices. After transitioning Poiat’s own furniture collection to Nikari in 2025, Timo Mikkonen left the studio to focus on his own projects and creative endeavors.
The origin of the word Poiat summarises both worlds of the company: a small village in the Italian Alps and a word meaning “boys” in one of the Finnish dialects. The love for Italian design aesthetics and heritage combined with the Finnish cultural tradition of collaborative working.
